Ketu, also known as the South Node of the Moon, is one of the two shadow planets in Vedic astrology. It is associated with sudden events, hidden knowledge, the occult, astrology, detachment, spiritual growth, isolation, and liberation. It also influences enemies and can lead to material or emotional losses.
In Vedic astrology, a planet is considered "malefic" if it causes material difficulties, particularly financial setbacks. Based on this definition, one might assume Ketu is always malefic. However, that is not entirely true.
Ketu's primary purpose is to guide individuals toward spirituality. This process often requires letting go of attachments to people and possessions, allowing for inner freedom. Ketu encourages detachment, which helps individuals focus on their spiritual journey rather than external influences.
In an astrological chart, Ketu’s placement in any house tends to create a sense of disconnection from that house’s influences. For instance, if Ketu is in the 4th house (except in Sagittarius), the individual may feel detached from their home and domestic life. Even if they own a large house, they may not find comfort in it. Alternatively, they might not own a home at all and instead prefer a nomadic lifestyle. Similarly, when Ketu is in the 7th house (unless in Sagittarius), it can create detachment from marriage and relationships, making the individual more inclined to solitude and self-sufficiency.
While Ketu’s influence fosters spiritual growth, certain placements can be challenging. A balanced life requires harmony between material and spiritual aspects. Excessive detachment may create difficulties in managing practical responsibilities, making it important to find equilibrium between worldly and spiritual pursuits.
